Working towards an award is a great way to develop your surf lifesaving skills and the club offers a range of training for all age groups.
Qualified members are critical to our ability to safely run coaching, events and lifeguard patrols. The club endeavours to cover the costs of training and exams for those who commit to use their skills to help the club run volunteer patrols, events, or coaching.
Prior learning can be recognised on some of these courses, providing a fast track to qualification.
Here are some of courses we support and run:
The Surf Lifeguard Award provides the learner with the knowledge and skills required in order to provide professional patrolling and water services, in surf conditions, with rescue skills and advanced fitness requirements.
We run a course annually, generally starting in June. Please contact Steve Instance – [email protected] for further information.
The course is the entry level to coaching sports in Great Britain. Its focus is on safe practice, basic communication skills and gaining the background knowledge of the environment, equipment, fitness and skill components relating to a specific sport.

A Level 2 Coach qualifies to practice as an independent coach. The level focus is on developing performance in individuals to suit individual needs. The coach is provided with information to develop skills and fitness, undertake risk assessments, set goals, plan for and evaluate training sessions.

This widely recognised and comprehensive first aid course provides an alternative pathway to gaining the first responder qualification without holding a lifeguard award. We are hoping to run a course this winter, dates TBA. Please email [email protected] if you are interested.
This award will establish a level of competence to deliver intermediate life support. It is an essential role in operating our voluntary lifeguard patrols. Please email [email protected] if you are interested.
The Patrol Captain Award will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required to organise, supervise and manage a volunteer led patrol in line with the requirements set out by the SLSGB Lifeguard framework for operation of patrols.
These awards build the confidence of the participants as well as developing fundamental surf safety and skills within the individuals own capability.
These awards will allow competent swimmers to gain a thorough grounding in Life Saving skills and beach awareness, and will provide valuable stepping stones to becoming a professional Beach Lifeguard.
